BBC Radio 4

Nicholas Parsons asks Tony Buzan how and why ageing impacts so heavily on our minds and memories. He explores whether years of exercising his mind - to retain information, facts and quotes for his performances and shows - has actually improved his memory, and shares his fear that age could mean losing chunks of his life.

Tony Buzan is a man on a mission.

His mission: to unlock the power of our brains, and show us how to tap and use our creative genius with ease. The Times of London predicts Buzan “will do for the brain what Stephen Hawking did for the universe.”

Buzan, the author or co-author of more than 80 books published in 100 countries, invented a breakthrough thinking tool called the Mind Map®.

Based on extensive research on the brain and memory, Mind Mapping also reflects many of the note-taking techniques used by Leonard da Vinci, Einstein, Picasso and Beethoven, to name a few.

For more than 30 years, Tony Buzan has been tireless in his quest to bring this powerful tool to the world. His techniques are taught and used in virtually every Fortune 500 company, and in countries throughout the world. As Forbes magazine says, Buzan “shows corporate executives how to hotwire their creative energies.”

Buzan challenges conventional thinking

In his keynote speech at the opening of the Education Show at the NEC in Birmingham, Tony Buzan challenged Chris Woodhead and other education experts on the place that creativity has in the curriculum.

“Most major studies on creativity confirm that it declines with every year of academic education, and then throughout life.” said Tony to a packed hall of teachers and educationalists.

“Modern studies indicate that creativity is not a rare, magic gift visited upon the isolated genius; it is the natural birthright of every human child and is a series of cognitive skills that can be taught, harnessed and applied to unleash what we are now discovering is the infinite creative capacity in every child. Learning How to Learn and Creativity need to be separate, basic parts of the school curriculum while simultaneously being woven into the fabric of every subject.”
